Obtaining Your Concealed Handgun License

To obtain a Texas concealed handgun license the State requires that you attend a course with a minimum of 10 hours of instruction; which consists of two parts the classroom portion and the shooting proficiency.

The classroom portion includes:

A gentleman at the firing range

For the shooting proficiency:

There are two methods to complete the shooting proficiency; in either case, you must complete the proficiency with a minimum of .32 caliber or larger. If you complete the proficiency with a revolver, you can only carry a revolver with the license. If you complete the proficiency with a semi-automatic, you can carry a revolver or semi-automatic.

A total of 50 shots are fired during the range proficiency test. A score of 70% or greater is required to pass, or 175 points out of the possible 250 points. The target used is a B-27 target, which is a human-shaped silhouette target that measures 45" high and 24" wide. All shooting is from the "ready position" where your firearm is already in a position to fire.
